Professor in Department of Medical Pharmacology,
Head in Cellular Stress Response and Signal Transduction Research Laboratory in Faculty of Medicine, Gazi University, Ankara.
Leader of Antioxidants in Diabetes-Induced Complications (ADIC) Study Group.

Prof. Çimen Karasu is a graduate of the University of Ankara, Faculty of Pharmacy. She did her post-graduate studies in Turkey and is a Fellow of the Queen Mary & Westfield College, Basic Medical Sciences and William Harvey Research Institute of London, England. Since the early 1990's, under the name "The Antioxidants in Diabetes-induced Complications (ADIC) Study Group" Prof. Karasu's laboratory was focusing on to the characterization of molecular and cellular events in glycoxidative stress-induced alterations during the course of diabetes and its complications as well as during recovery after treatment with various substances and drugs including synthetic and natural antioxidant compounds, antiglycoxidative agents, trace elements, essential fatty acids, blood glucose and lipid lowering drugs, and insulin sensitizer compounds. In addition, the role of pancreas, gastroenteropancreatic hormones, adipose tissue hormones and neuropeptides in the regulation of energy metabolism are in the centre of her research interest. Determination of free radical-induced cell death and functiontional abnormalities, apoptotic signal transduction pathway alterations, and the effects of pyridoindole compounds are in interest of her research. She has also patents by pyridoindole antioxidants and some herbal extracts. The examining the mechanisms of action of natural and synthetic antioxidants in aging process and animal models for accelerated aging are main research topics of Dr. Karasu. During her academic period, she has many international and national research projects on the role of lipid peroxidation as a possible prognostic factor for the development of diabetes, oxidative protein damage, its molecular relationship to mutation and metabolic disorders, and its possible modulation aging by diet. She was a management committee member of European Science Foundation, COST Action B35 and a partner of EU-KORANET- life long health. She has more than 100 scientific publications. Prof. Karasu was advisor in drug licensing and legislation department of Ministry Health, Turkey in period 1997-2001. She is writing and speaking recently on the cellular mechanisms responsible for aging and age-related disease, and the preventive and regenerative modalities for age-related biological alterations, new drug targets and the intervention of natural herbal products in the age management and the prevention of age-related metabolic disease such as diabetes.
